This eminent scientist and engineer has also served as the 11th President of India from the period 2002 to 2007. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam (Avul Pkir Jainulabdeen Abdul Kalam) is a man of vision, who is always full ideas aimed at the development of the country. He firmly believes that India needs to play a more assertive role in international relation. He is often referred to as the Missile Man of India. People loved and respected Dr APJ Abdul Kalam so much during his tenure as president that he was popularly called the People's president
He was born on Octobor 15,1931 at Rameshwaram in Tamil Nadu. He studied at Schwartz High school in Ramanathpuram. He graduated in science from St. Joseph's collage at Truchi. He did his D.M.I.T. in Aeronautical Engineering at M.I.T., Chennai. Kalam joined hindustan Aeronautics Limited at Bangalore as trainee.
Later, he joined the D.T.D. & P. as Senior Scientist Assistant heading a small team that developed a prototype hovercraft. As Directer of D.R.D.O., he worked on the Integrated Guided Missile Development Programme. Under Kalam's guidence, India successfully launched many missile like Trishul in 1985, Prithvi in 1988 an Agni in 1989, which earned him title 'Missile man of India'.
He received honorary dectorates from about 30 universities globally In the year 1981, the Goverment of India presented him the nation's highest civilian honour, the Padma Bhushan and then again, the Padma Vibhusahan in 1990 and the Bharat Ratna in 1997. Before Dr. Kalam, there have been only two presidents Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan and Zakir Hussain to have received that Bharat Ratna before being appointed to the highest office in India.
Dr APJ Abdul Kalam, is also the first scientist and bachelor to occupy the seat of the Rashtrapati Bhavan. His perspective on important topics have been enunciated by him in the book 'India 2020'. It highlights the action plans that will help develop the country into a knowledge superpower by the year 2020. On thing for which he received ample kudos is his unambiguous statement that India needs to play a more assertive role in international relations.

Kalam's life is literally a story of success through sheer hard work and determination, specially considering that he started life as a boat owner's son, who sold newspaper as a child. The secret is in positive thinking, for according to Dr Kalam, "Thinking should become your capital asset, no matter whatever ups and downs you come across in your life." Unlike other political leaders, he retains his humility and accessibility. For Kalam, India's true assets are its youth and he continues to try and motivate them. As he says, "The nation requires role models in leadership who can inspire youngsters. There is no dearth of resources and talent in this country but what we need is more creativity.
Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam regards his work on India's nuclear weapons programme as a way to assert India's place as a future superpower. Even during his tenure as President, APJ Kalam took avid interest in the spheres of India's science and technology. He has even put forward a project plan for establishing bio-implant. He is also an ardent advocate of open source software over proprietary solutions to churn out more profits in the field of information technology in India.
